Both of The Summit Country Day School’s varsity Mock Trial teams have qualified for Feb. 24 regional competition.
Team Blue and Team Silver were among 42 area teams competing Jan. 31 when the Cincinnati Bar Association hosted the Hamilton County District High School Mock Trial Competition. Throughout Ohio, about 400 teams compete in their districts and about 35% of teams earn the right to compete at regionals. Summit has been competing in Mock Trial since 2002 and has won in district competition six of the last seven years.
Each year the Ohio Center for Law Related Education writes a fictional case based on current cases active throughout the country. This year’s case revolved around whether or not police can obtain GPS data from someone’s cell phone without a warrant. Students worked from late September to prepare to argue both sides of the case. In order to move on to the regional competition, a team must argue one side of the case in Round 1 and the other in Round 2, and must defeat both schools they are up against.
This year, Summit’s Team Blue defeated a team from Oak Hills and Turpin, while Team Silver defeated a team from St. Ursula and a different team from Turpin. Both teams also swept the individual awards given at their trials. Outstanding Attorney went to Isabelle Saldana, John Burrington, Stephen Hutchins, and Abby Taylor. Outstanding Witness went to Ty Wahlbrink, Alex Marcellus, Cooper Schreibeis, and Reeti Pal.
While the junior varsity team did not qualify for regionals, two students did win individual awards. Abby McIntyre won Outstanding Attorney in Round 1 against Moeller and Morgan Hughes took Outstanding Witness against Indian Hill. Three teams are coached by three local attorneys: Rebecca Wright, Richard Campbell, and 2003 Summit Graduate Kelly Leibold. The Summit Mock Trial program is run by Upper School Social Studies Chair Kelly Cronin.
Members of Team Silver are: Reeti Pal, Omar Khoury, Abby Taylor, Mark Samaan, Jack Schroder, Cooper Schreibeis, Nick Inglin, Stephen Hutchins and Dale Lakes.
Members of Team Blue are Peter Hoffman, John Burrington, Max Williams, Isabelle Saldana, Emily Hogya, Rachel Argo, Alex Marcellus, Ty Wahlbrink, Natalie Pearl and Adam Chow.
The Summit Country Day School serves students from age two through grade twelve in a coeducational setting. The Summit combines the academic excellence and one-on-one guidance of a top-tier independent school with the servant leadership and character building environment that are hallmarks of a Catholic education.
