Summit Country Day School senior Stephen Hutchins has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.

Stephen, the son of Drs. Robert and Deborah Hutchins of Montgomery, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 674. To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout must progress through all the prior ranks from Tenderfoot to Life, earn 21 merit badges including ones for Citizenship in the Community, Nation and World; serve six months in a troop leadership position and undertake a major service project. Eagle Scout projects include planning, development, fundraising and leadership of a team – all of which is subject to review by the beneficiary organization and scouting officials.

Stephen designed, constructed, and installed waterproof, wooden outdoor cases to display inspirational scripture passages along a devotional walking trail at Whitewater Crossing Christian Church in Cleves.

“I researched the new concept, gained approval, developed the design, identified devotional themes, and led scouts and adults to build and mount seven display cases along the trail on posts we cemented into the ground. We also provided the church sets of seven printed and laminated scripture passages on five different themes.”

Stephen has been involved in the Boy Scouts for 11 years. “I’ve gained real life leadership experience, and I’ve learned about long-term project planning,” he said. “I’ve also gained a lot of experience in the outdoors. I’ve been able to do a lot of outdoor activities that a lot of people haven’t had the chance to do, like actual rock climbing, caving and backpacking. It’s great being able to have outdoors experiences like that.”
