Several members of The Summit Country School attended the People of Color Conference / Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Philadelphia Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Philadelphia.

The annual conference is sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools and addresses two important needs: the need for people of color to come together for networking and support, and the need for schools to find ways to build and sustain inclusive communities.

Students participating in the Student Diversity Leadership Conference apply the skills they develop at the conference to plan and implement activities that benefit the entire student body. Summit students attending this year’s conference were: senior John Burrington, junior Yoseph Dalia, senior Katie Funk, senior Jesse Hughes, junior Meg Mathile, junior Sean Steinman, freshman Maverick Thurston, and junior Nakia Woodard.

The adults attending the People of Color Conference attended workshops aimed at understanding the value of diversity in independent schools and at developing ways to create and maintain inclusive learning environments. The adults attending were: Mike Bergeron, Kelly Cronin, Greg Dennis, Terry Malone, Tim Mathile, Gail Rosero, and Yngrid Thurston.
