Seventh grader Waleed Amir persevered through 13 rounds of the Middle School spelling bee on Wednesday before he emerged the champion.

His winning word: perseverance.

The competition in St. Cecelia Hall included 25 students in grades 4-8. Spelling words were provided by the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Sixth grader Kendall Kearney fought hard during the final four rounds and finished as runner up. Eighth grader Maggie Taylor finished in third place.
