Mix it Up at Lunch Day
October 19, 2011
Social Studies Teacher Skip Lynam shares a lunchtime table with students during Mix it Up Day.
The Summit’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee invited students, faculty and staff to participate in “Mix It Up at Lunch Day” on Tuesday, Oct. 18. “Mix It Up at Lunch” is a national event launched a decade ago by Teaching Tolerance, aimed at encouraging people to sit with someone they have not sat with before, move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new.
Here are reflections by several teachers about their observations of the day:
“The eighth graders with whom I spoke loved Mix It Up Day.The students in my D Block Religion Class recommend that we do it once a month. They especially thought it was fun to see the teachers sit with students.”

“The kindergarten children had a good time sitting in different places and with different friends. We had numbered the 17 tables used by kindergarten and handed them each a number. It mixed them up within the three big groups. There were conversation starter sheets on the tables for them to use. They had fun.”
-- Linda Moeggenberg
“I had lunch with a group of Upper and Middle school students. There were a lot of students who liked the idea and were willing to Mix It Up. Others had a harder time leaving their regular lunch buddies.”
--Yngrid Thurston
“Lower School Mix It Up went well. We tried to make it so no one from the same homeroom sat together. A few of the kids weren’t thrilled they couldnt sit with their “buddies” but most of them embraced the chance to sit with new friends. The conversation starters were still on some of the tables from Montessori (Thank you!) and the kids enjoyed those!
