Student members of The Summit Diversity and Inclusion Team led two assemblies in January to explore definitions of community and the many different roles members have within a community.
The goal of the assemblies was to help students develop a better understanding of their responsibilities as members of a community, give students a chance to interact with each other by assuming different roles within their groups add and solve problems together in Advisement groups.
As an exercise, in the first assembly students watched Joshua Weigel’s film The Butterfly Circus, which depicts two different communities -- that focuses on the disabilities of its members and the other that instead celebrates the strengths and the abilities of its followers. Students worked in Advisement groups to define “community” in the context of the movie and shared their reactions in speeches, skits and artwork in the second assembly.
