Health Curriculum in Grades 1-4

The Health Curriculum in Grades 1 through 4 focuses on the following areas of study:

Mental Health, Family Life, Nutrition, Substance Use Prevention, Personal Health and Fitness, Disease Prevention and Control, Safety and Injury Prevention, and  Environmental Health.

Rather than list a comprehensive list of objectives, the following outline lists 1 of the major objectives by grade level for each of the topics listed above.

Grade 1

Mental Health
Associate feelings with behavior

Explain the importance of eating a healthy breakfast

Identify examples of healthy and unhealthy habits

Explain how rest and sleep are helpful to their bodies

List ways to prevent accidents

Environmental Health
Describe behaviors that will help improve the environment


Grade 2

Mental Health           
Demonstrate effective listening skills

Family Life
Describe how family members may have different points of view

Nutrition
Name six essential nutrients

Substance Use Prevention
Identify healthy versus unhealthy drinks

Personal Health and Fitness
Name activities that promote fitness

Disease Prevention and Control
List ways they can stay healthy

Safety and Injury Prevention
Describe basic first aid skills and give correct responses to various accident situations

Environmental Health
Identify actions that help to protect the environment


Grade 3

Mental Health           
Plan ways to get along with others

Family Life
Describe situations in which family/friends influence decision making

Nutrition
Name foods that are primarily carbohydrate, protein and fat

Substance Use Prevention
Identify reasons not to use alcohol and tobacco

Personal Health and Fitness
Demonstrate correct posture and describe the effect of posture on health

Disease Prevention and Control
Describe behaviors that help to prevent illness and disease

Safety and Injury Prevention
Practice making decisions regarding safety in various problem situations

Environmental Health
Identify examples of air, water and land pollution


Grade 4

Mental Health           
Identify ways to improve his/her self image

Role play how to positively deal with problems with family members and friends

Nutrition
Identify the function of each of the six basic nutrients.

Substance Use Prevention
Identify the advertising and peer influences regarding tobacco use

Personal Health and Fitness
Identify activities the cardiorespiratory fitness

Disease Prevention and Control
Describe the difference between communicable and Non-communicable diseases

Safety and Injury Prevention
Develop safety messages reflecting what to do in case of different types off emergencies

Body Structure, Function and Growth
Explain different types of muscle tissue and name examples of each

Environmental Health
Associate disease prevention with community and environmental health
