Remembering Farrell Ackley
              1941-2010

"The important task in life is perhaps not to aim for heaven, but to aim for honor. We must live our lives so that those who know us will trust us, will know that we will never betray them. In his years as a coach and as teacher, Farrell has always been a man of honor. On the field and in the classroom he has, by the example of his own life, shown the young men and women of The Summit how they might live properly, with rectitude, wit and kindness. Over and above his spectacular record as a coach, he has taken that scuffed green field and made it into a place where boys can learn about fairness and fierce competition and the fellowship of sports. On the field and in the classroom, he has shown young men and women how to reach the fineness that is in each of them.

Nothing remains the same. Farrell has left us but his influence will be felt far into the 21st century."

Eulogy by Matt Ackley ‘86

”My dad was one of the first coaches to use computer generated tendencies for game planning, and I believe our playbooks and scouting reports were thicker than the textbooks at most of the schools we played. He even introduced a playbook to my sister’s powder puff football games.“

Remembrance by Tom Monaco

”It is now our responsibility to grieve, as we need to, but then to celebrate as we must with every fiber of our being and memory the wonderful, robust and meaningful life this substantial man shared with us.“
