The Upper School Diversity and Inclusion Team is one of several Summit institutions through which students and faculty gain knowledge, develop skills, and share our learning and talents to strengthen the larger community.
The D&I group meets twice weekly, once in a formal meeting Tuesday morning and again at lunch on Friday for a more specific, often less formal, purpose—to rehearse for a debate, to review a film before making it part of a presentation, or to celebrate. Frequent, purposeful gatherings are the cornerstone of our committed group, and the reason why D&I has been able to give so much of ourselves to the school every year.
In order to gain diversity training and leadership opportunities, each year members of the D&I team participate in the national People of Color Conference (PoCC) and the local Circles of Diversity Conference (CoD). Throughout the year, students apply the skills they develop in these conferences and other experiences to plan and implement activities that benefit the entire student body. This call to share one’s learning for the benefit of the whole community is at the heart of our school’s mission, and it drives the D&I team.
