D&I Middle School

Bruce Bowdon and Jerry Hilton

D&I Middle school believes that the concept of being inclusive comes from appreciation and respect of others feelings and beliefs and we work to bring different perspectives to create a multicultural view of the topics we address.
This year we will use Critical Literacy and Literature Circles to address the school year theme The Sacred Dignity of the Individual.

Critical Literacy is the ability to use a book, a magazine article, a film, a song, or a poem in a reflective way to address topics of power, inequality, and/or injustice in human relations. A Literature Circle is the vehicle that allows students to bring their personal experiences to the discussion, to promote personal connections with peers, and to be flexible and open-minded of others’ points of view.

Using Literature Circles as a springboard to discussion, students will gather during advisement to respond to the text in light of their own experiences and respond to the text as it pertains to their experiences as an advisement.

The D&I Team believes that these practices will contribute to a culture of tolerance in our community where students can safely express, and respectfully listen to, others’ points of view. Also, this practice will give advisors a great opportunity to get to know their advisees through their participation in the program.
