Lower School- Montessori Head Teacher Education: B.A. and M. Ed. Xavier University, Montessori Education Certification: Ohio Certification and Non-tax Preschool to third grade American Montessori Society Certification, Ages 3-6 Teaching Experience: 36 years 31 years at The Summit I love working with children and hope to guide them to a love of learning. I have done this through teaching math, language, science, social studies, geography, religion, art and music -- all in the Montessori method. I chose The Summit after doing my student teaching here. My grandmother and inspiration, Antoinette Daly Homan, was a 1916 graduate of The Summit. I was also taught in grade school by Notre Dame Sisters and was inspired by them and their devotion to the school. Children learn by using all their senses. They also have a high level of concentration, a strong sense of order, and times in their development when they are more sensitive to absorbing specific concepts. At an early age, children can learn to make choices, to lead and take responsibility for their own learning and to reach their maximum potential. I am married to Larry Humpert, an architect with A.M. Kinney. I have four children: Joe, a Summit and University of Illinois graduate; Teddy, a Summit graduate and junior at Ohio University; Matt, a senior at The Summit and Mark , a freshman at The Summit. I am involved in Matt's and Mark's high school activities, especially the boys' soccer team. I enjoy gardening, knitting, reading and running.

It is important to weed out my character weaknesses and strive towards excellence by focusing on my gifts. Humility, Kindness and Intelligence are key ingredients in my teaching. This summer I participated in the Positive Discipline Workshop. It was very powerful and beneficial towards my role at The Summit. Lower School-Montessori Head Teacher All-day Advanced Enrichment Class Education: B.S. Ohio State University Certification: AMS Montessori Certification ages 3-6 Ohio state five year license to teach K-8 Teaching Experience: 25 years 24 years at The Summit I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I met some! My kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Schmidt and I loved her! My youngest brother was five years old when I entered Ohio State and he became my "experimental" kindergarten child. I was privileged to accompany him on many field trips and help his class with projects. I taught 3-4 year olds at a preschool my first year out of college and then found my "home," The Summit! I saw an ad for a middle school Science or Math position at The Summit and called in for that position. After hearing my experience, I was offered a position in the Montessori as an assistant. What I found was an amazing philosophy and school. Not only did I further my education to get my 3-6 Montessori degree, I also found a home and school for my daughters, who are now lifers at The Summit. In the past, I have been actively involved in the summer camp program. I also volunteer when I can for various SPA events. Outside of the classroom, I have helped the parish collect various food stuffs and Christmas gifts. I have volunteered to teach preschool religion classes over the years. My husband and I also donate to United Way as well as The Summit. This summer I attended a full-day workshop at Wilmington College on Positive Discipline. This was funded through the James Evans Grant Program at The Summit. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Jim, and we have two girls who are lifers at the Summit. Jim and I have been married for 21 years. I was married the same year I started at The Summit. My daughter Marie is a senior and Rachel is in eighth grade. We have two dogs, both Golden Retrievers: Clifford, 14 and Buster, 4. I enjoy going to my children's sporting and school events. I also enjoy reading and music of all types. I have been blessed to work at the Summit. The school and its community is an integral part of my life. I am so happy to be a part of The Summit community doing something that I have always wanted to do - teach kindergarten! It is extra special that my two girls are with me and I have fabulous colleagues!

Lower School-Montessori Teaching Assistant Education: B.S. Education Nine hours towards Masters Certification: K-8 Teaching Experience: 17 years 17 years at The Summit When I interviewed with the Montessori director, Phyllis Schueler, I liked her right away. My interview with Ed Tyrrell revealed his love for The Summit and I perceived he had a real sense of fairness and professional expectation from people who taught and worked here. Then, when I stepped into the beautiful chapel, I had a sense of belonging and I feel that every time I walk through there. It is a wonderful thing to be able to spend some moments with God during the work day. I believe that each child should be treated by their teacher as if he or she were their own child. The child needs love, understanding, and a sense of safety and well being at school. Also, they should have high expectations for themselves as well as their teachers. Teaching at The Summit is wonderful because of the hard-working people here(especially my co-worker, Linda Moeggenberg), the caring parents, and most of all, the children. I have been married for 40 years with two married daughters and one adorable grandson. Recently, we lost our dog, Boris to cancer. I enjoy reading, travel and golf.

Lower School-Montessori Head Teacher Education: B.S.N. Otterbein College, Nursing M.Ed. Xavier University, Early Childhood Education Certification: Pre-K- 3 Teaching Experience: 10 years 9 years at The Summit When my husband and I were transferred to Cincinnati with his job, our realtor suggested The Summit Country Day School. We placed our children, Brianna and Gabriel here. When I saw what they were learning in the Montessori school I was very impressed. I began to substitute in the Montessori and after one year decided that I wanted to go back to school to get a Masters in Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Montessori learning. I was intrigued by the level of dedication and creative expression in education. I was also impressed with the children I knew who attended The Summit, and the level of maturity and knowledge they possessed. My teaching philosophy stems from the belief that children should be allowed to explore our world in a fun and exciting environment and to provide as many experiences as possible. I like to open the world up to our children while having an understanding of the roles and responsibilities in life. I believe children should know that we are responsible to and for each other as reflected in the teachings of Christ. I am very involved with my parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Anderson. I am currently working with the 7th grade Boy Scouts on the Catholic Religious emblem Ad Altare Dei. In the community, I am the coordinator for the State of Ohio Board of Education required PRAXIS III assessment process. I work with newly graduated teachers or those who have transferred from another state who now teach at The Summit. I also serve as the recording secretary to the LPDC committee. I have been married to Kevin for 25 years, we have two adopted children who are only 5 months 3 days apart in age! We also have a sweet dog, Oreo, who is a border collie/lab mix. I enjoy reading, sewing, and scrapbooking.

Lower School Music Education: B.S. Ball State University, Music Education, piano and voice M.M. Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, piano accompanying Certification: K-12 Teaching Experience: 23 years 9 Years at The Summit In the past, I have taught High School Choral Music, Music Theory, K - 8 general music, Kindermusik (music program for preschool children), as well as piano and piano-related courses at Xavier University. My children were already attending The Summit when I decided to teach here. I already knew it was a great school. I love being in their environment. My approach to early music education is process-oriented. I believe children can learn by doing. We focus on steady beat and singing in tune. In the primary grades I use an Orff-Schulwerk based approach, which again involves active participation in music. We sing, play instruments, move, and learn about composers in an active, fun way. Musical literacy is an important component of the Primary music curriculum. Outside of The Summit, I am the Music Director at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, Kentucky. Over the Summer, I received two Evans grants. I also received training in "Music Together," an early childhood curriculum. I also took a workshop about how to improve children in music liturgy. I have been married to Jeff for 20 years. We have two boys attending The Summit and two cats.

I wanted to be part of an institution that offered students the opportunity to develop their character, as well as receiving an excellent academic and Catholic education. I believe in being a passionate, enthusiastic and motivated educator who provides a link to help my students discover a new language and cultural world. I want my students to experience the joy of learning and to develop confidence in their ability to speak another language and interact with people from a different culture, so that they can be our future ambassadors to the world. Here at The Summit, I am a member the Curriculum Coordinators Committee, the Team Leaders Committee, and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
