Upper School History, Government, and Psychology Education: B.S. Xavier University M.A. University of Dayton Certification: Social Studies Comprehensive Teaching Experience: 46 years 37 years at The Summit I was inspired to become a teacher because I love history and the idea of service. Over the years I've taught just about all the Social Studies areas - government, history, economics, and psychology. History is an area that requires the spirit of critical inquiry; psychology is an opportunity to bring science to the study of human behavior. I want to instill a sense of inquiry and critical thinking in my students. The opportunity for my children to go to a school like the Summit was attractive and I also liked the opportunity to teach and coach at a great school. Three of my children are graduates of The Summit; two were married in the chapel - one to a classmate. My wife and I have five grandchildren.

Upper School Chemistry Teacher Education: B. S. Chemistry Certification: Chemistry and Physics Teaching Experience: 9 years 5 years at The Summit I really wanted to share my enthusiasm for chemistry with young people. Physical scientists are so important, and we need to motivate our brightest minds in that direction for the good of all. The Summit Country Day School, more than any other, really cares about children. You can see that the people who work here truly enjoy teaching and being around students. It really is like family and you really feel connected. My teaching philosophy is to set the bar high, but to allow students to stand on your shoulders, if they need to to get there. I really want my subject to be accessible to all students. I use a lot of hands-on learning and storytelling to get the concept across. I am a member of the Junior League of Cincinnati and I work a lot with the Freestore/Foodbank. I am a member of the American Chemical Society High School Exam Committee. I am one of 20 teachers nationally who write an exam for high school chemistry. I was published on the 2005 Exam and will be published on the 2007 Exam. I am married, to my husband Fred who is an English teacher at Cincinnati Country Day School. I have two daughters, Katie, who will soon be 5 years old and Ellie, who will soon be 3 years old. Michael Sparough. The Summit has been unlike any school I have experienced and I wanted to be a part of it. Through my teachings I deliver a message that says that spiritual wellness is just as important as physical wellness. So much can be discovered about ourselves just from studying Sacred Scripture and Church History. I have also been able to develop both Spiritual and Physical wellness through coaching both boys and girls tennis. This I have done for 17 seasons, as well as coached boys basketball for five years. Prior to teaching, I worked in the business world for eight years. I am currently working on my Masters degree.

When I began teaching here, The Summit Libraries were not automated. The library used card catalogs and the material was outdated. Mr. Tyrrell promised a new library for the Upper School which we opened in 1996. It is my philosophy to see each student as an individual. There are constant opportunities to work with students one-on-one in the library. I would like to see each student develop as an independent learner. Students who master the art of research at The Summit will be confident in their abilities at the college level. Currently, I take part in many Summit activities. I am the moderator in the Student Book Club, head the Knitting Club which knits blankets for homeless shelters, and serve as the faculty advisor for Honor Council. I am married with one son, Jeremy, a Summit graduate.

They sparked my interest in sharing what I know with others. I have taught Biology, Human Osteology, Honors Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Crime Scene Analysis Through Forensic Science, and Statistics. My primary goal was to teach and continue research in human osteology and forensic science. The Summit provided the best of both worlds. Not only is The Summit strong academically, it is a community rich in a tradition of service with a family centered outlook. "Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as hard duty." Albert Einstein My goal is to demonstrate the relevance of biology in the student's life, regardless of the student's possible career choice, and to awaken and reinforce the student's sense of curiosity about the world. They challenged me daily and made learning fun. Here at The Summit, you feel like part of a large family. You are given so much respect from your colleagues, administrators and most importantly from parents and students. I love coming to work and never (almost never) have the Monday Blues. The world is a very small place these days. I want my students to be a part of the global community and to embrace different cultures. I want them to understand the other cultures that exist around us. I want them to grow up and be able to speak Spanish to their patients, clients, students, etc. I also want them to have the interest and yearning to travel abroad and to come back with even more enthusiasm than before to learn and speak the language. I actually read the letters Ed Tyrrell wrote in each issue. He described a school and a mission that matched the one I had followed for 17 years as a Marianist brother. When the invitation came to become part of the "quest," my wife and I were willing to move from an excellent school in Houston and to become a part of the Summit Country Day School community. After 20 years I have no regrets. I officially moderate the Chemistry Club. This year for the first time we are affiliated with the American Chemical Society. I am also the "unofficial" school photographer. I try to get pictures at most school events and make them available for the yearbook and other venues needing school pictures. I also film home football games as well as other athletic games from my perch in the the fifth floor window overlooking the field. I am also the unofficial "gopher." If one needs anything that isn't available through normal channels, come see me and I probably have what you need stored somewhere in the building. I am a volunteer with the American Chemical Society. As a volunteer I have performed. and currently perform, demonstration shows for Cub Scout troops, local libraries, the Museum Center, COSI. I have served on a number of committees for the ACS including Chairman of the Advisory Board for ChemMatters - the ACS high school chemistry journal, a co-author of a number of the first year national high school exams, high school program chair for the 1986 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education held at Montana State U. in Bozeman, Montana, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Examinations Institute which oversees testing on the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level, a consultant for the AP chemistry exam, and an instructor at a number of chemistry summer institutes to name a few. I am married to Mary Ann O'Donnell, a 1971 Summit alumna. We were married in the Summit Chapel in 1984. Our three children, James, class of 2004, Mia, class of 2007, and Marisa, class of 2009, are fourth generation Summit students. Upper School Math Education: B.A. Miami University M.A. Xavier University Certification: Math, grades 7-12 Teaching Experience: 11 years 4 years at The Summit I have always had an enthusiasm for math. I wanted to pass this on to others and there seemed to be a need for experienced math teachers. Teaching is a great way to stay young and feel like you are contributing to the future. As a former Catholic school student (grades 1-12), I am a firm believer in Catholic values and in the power to help pass along this way of growing and learning to others. I interviewed at The Summit looking to push myself as a teacher and found a great working environment with dedicated and talented staff to support me. I believe that my role as teacher is to guide students into an understanding of the math material presented in such a way that they can use the information as needed. While they learn, it is also part of my responsibility to encourage in them an appreciation of the subject and a respect for themselves and for others. My job is to prepare them for life outside of school. This means that I hold them to a very high standard with regard to personal responsibility and accountability. I see myself as a partner with the students and their parents in ensuring the success of each child. Recently, I took part in a conference on Geometer Sketchpad, a software package used to allow students hands-on experience with math concepts. This summer I attended a conference on Schools Attuned, an educational model that emphasizes the need to focus on the strengths of each child and help them find ways to succeed in spite of their deficiencies. I have been married for 23 years and have two children. I enjoy golf and am active in Music Ministry at my church.

Upper School Physics Education: B.S. Northern Kentucky University M.S. Miami University Currently, working on doctorate in Physics education at the University of Cincinnati Certification: Non-Tax Certificate Teaching Experience: 6 years 4 years at The Summit I really enjoy it when students have 'light bulb moments'. It is very rewarding to have a student understand a concept that we have been discussing. I was inspired to become a teacher by a young, female professor who taught astronomy. I took her class and decided I wanted to do what she does for a living. She was vibrant and loved the subject. I wanted to be that for other students! The Summit has a wonderful reputation for having high academic standards as well as good moral values. I wanted to be a part of a team of good, caring people. I also wanted to be challenged, and I am challenged every day. I like to be a facilitator. I don't like to teach to the students. Instead, I bring to them the ability to make their own discoveries. I lead them along the path of learning. I love our lab days for that reason. They do hands-on experiments that help them to discover key concepts in Physics. I attended an AP Physics workshop last year at Xavier University and I have co-taught a Physics by Inquiry class at the University of Cincinnati each summer for the past three years. I was married in 2003 and recently had my first child, Liam, in January, 2006. He is the light of my life! I am so happy to be here at The Summit. I work with a great group of people! I could not have made it through my first year, pregnant with Liam, without all of my wonderful and caring colleagues! This is an exceptional place with a very positive atmosphere.

"I am here to serve. Put me where I am needed," he says. For more than three decades he has provided quality science education and genuine personal caring to students at The Summit. This year the Cincinnati section of the American Chemical Society chose Mr. Gorey as the high school teacher who best exemplifies the ideals of science educators. The Society award, presented April 20 at Northern Kentucky University, is one of many awards that Gorey has received, among them, the Schilderink Family Faculty Chair Award for Distinguished Teaching in June 2001. He has been recognized by the Ohio House of Representatives for his contributions to education throughout his teaching career and received a similar commendation from the Kentucky Senate. He is a Kentucky Colonel, having been named so by the Governor of Kentucky for his many years of dedication to his students and their development. He was chairman of the Science Department here at The Summit for eight years. Beyond the classroom, for 27 years until 2003, Mr. Gorey was responsible for the creation and implementation of the Adventure Club, a collection of educationally adventurous student trips that have included crawling through caves, snorkeling around coral reefs of Hawaii, archaeology in Ireland, and visiting all manner of intriguing scientific environments around this region and beyond. Mr. Gorey's energetic, experiential classes and his demonstrative, positive personality have earned the respect and admiration of his peers while endearing him to three generations of Summit students. Bob is known for his hard work, spending hours after school to help students with special needs learn science. One of Bob's colleague writes "I have spent 42 years in the profession and observed hundreds of teachers in the four schools where I have served and Bob Gorey is clearly and demonstrably one of the finest instructors and student mentors I have known." Bob's approach to mentoring includes establishing a lasting relationship with his students. Alums who return always want to see him. Those who participated on his many trips all embrace this wonderful teacher because they learned from him-in any number of venues-that they were important, capable and cared for by this special teacher and friend. Gorey grew up as one of seven children in a family of Irish descent in Paris, Kentucky. He earned degrees from the University of Dayton and Xavier University, attended the University of Kentucky and served in the U.S. Air Force. I enjoy working with my students, both encouraging them in the subject matters, as well as learning from them. I am particularly interested in the effects of historical setting, culture and geographic location on the development of individuals and communities. I attended The Summit from 7th grade until graduation. While a student I participated in varsity field hockey, cheerleading, Insight, Rostrum, theater productions and Random Blossoms (the poetry magazine). My son, Christopher Lee, is 10 years old and in 5th grade at The Summit. He started in the Montessori program at the age of 3. We have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Duncan. I am a head usher at St. Anthony's Church in Madisonville, and Archivist at The Summit. I also enjoy reading, writing, movies, theater and sports.

Middle and Upper School Director of Choral Music Department Education: B.A. Bowling Green State University, Music Education M.A. University of Akron, Voice Performance Certification: Music K-12 Teaching Experience: 29 years 7 years at The Summit I became a music teacher because I enjoyed explaining things to other students, especially in music. I could not imagine doing anything other than what I do. I left my job in a public school where I was earning a larger salary. I came here because I was looking for new challenges in my classroom with regard to technology and new courses. I also wanted to be in an environment where the things I valued were also valued by students, families, faculty and staff. Every child has a gift to contribute. My job is to cultivate that gift and provide opportunities for growth and success now and in the future. I am a member of Knox Presbyterian Church and a section leader/soloist with the Knox Choir which presents an annual music series of sacred concerts. I am also a member and frequent soloist with the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati. I have performed as a soloist with Musica Sacra, The Cincinnati Choral Society, the Richmond Symphony and Earlham College. I have even recorded with the Cleveland Orchestra on London Decca records. I am married to Tom Merrill, Director of Choral Activities at Xavier University and my immediate predecessor at The Summit. Our daughter, Regina, 11, is a Summit lifer and is in the sixth grade. We enjoy our pets, two Siamese cats and two Brittany Spaniels.

The 19 years I have been here have been wonderful. I try to get students to achieve at their highest level because education is more than preparing them for the job market. Education should lead students to understand their present world, the contributions from the past and the possibilities for the future. The tradition of the liberal arts here suggests that knowledge has intrinsic value. Upper School Physics Education: B.S. University of Florida, Chemical Engineering M.S. Florida State University, Physics Certification: Science and Math Teaching Experience: 18 years 8 years at The Summit The memory remains clear; my father comes home from work and asks me to follow him into the kitchen. From a wrinkled brown lunch bag, he carefully removes a wooden test tube stand, six small test tubes, and several small dropper bottles. He half fills each tube with water, and then carefully adds a few drops of liquid to each. "Watch" he says. As my father adds a drop from a brown bottle to the first tube, it turns the water inside dark blue; the next becomes bright pink. Another brown bottle brings forth green and yellow. I'm five, and I'm hooked. Science will be my life's work. Physicist, engineer, teacher, coach, father, and husband; like everyone, I wear many hats. One theme pervades them all: my love and passion for education and science. My life experiences outside the classroom help me make physics more than just another science course for students. Enthusiasm, the unexpected, stories about successes and failures, hands-on activities, high expectations, eye-catching demonstrations, discussions about what science and mathematics can contribute to solving local or global problems, whatever it requires. I make sure that classes are as lively and interesting as possible. My classroom is a learning laboratory for my students, and myself. I have taught Calculus, Advanced Placement Physics, Honors Physics, and Earth/Space Science. Within this range, I have taught high school as well as industry and university courses. At The Summit, I am the co-moderator for the Academic Team and Chess Club, Moderator for the Rocket Club, and Student Science Research advisor. I also am the Youth/Middle School girls lacrosse assistant coach for Lakota Lacrosse Club and Science Olympiad coach for Ridge Junior School. Hands-on research brings the chalkboard and textbook to life. It also makes the classroom fun. Several years ago I joined the local QUARKNET group, sponsored by the University of Cincinnati. This group allows me to interact with my fellow physics teachers, attend lectures by research physicists, and bring new ideas into my classroom. I joined with several colleagues to write a proposal that has been funded for the Summer of 2006 which will bring particle physics research into our classrooms. Students around Cincinnati will build their equipment, do collaborative research, and interpret data, then present their results. The only student requirement: a desire to participate and learn!

The chance to interact with young minds and profess a love for the language led me to this career. I came to The Summit because I wanted to return to the Catholic school environment after eight years in the public schools. My teaching philosophy is simple. Children respond to enthusiasm and competence. If a teacher knows his subject and is enthusiastic, he can impart that to the students. The methods he chooses must be compatible with his own personality and the needs of his students. I teach who sits before me; this often means that each section, each day, each year is unique. Here at The Summit I participate in the Book Club, as Spirit Club advisor and as business manager of Rostrum. I have 14 nieces and nephews who live throughout the country. I still enjoy dance aerobics, reading, cooking, and big band music.

After spending fifteen years as a government and public relations professional and attorney in Washington D.C., I returned to Ohio with my family. We wanted to be closer to family and more engaged in the local community. I knew I wanted to teach at a high school or college here once my time as a stay at home Dad ended. We chose Summit as the school for our children. After repeated interaction with the Summit faculty, students, and Administration, I decided that teaching at Summit would be an ideal way to share my experiences in the nation's capital while becoming involved in the daily lives of students in the community. I am married to Ann Navaro. Together we have two children, both in Lower School at Summit.

Middle School 8th Grade English Education B.A. Psychology, Eduation and Spanish Literature from Washington University in St. Louis M.A. Education from St. Louis University Certification: Elementary 1st - 8th Teaching Experience: 12 years 3rd year at The Summit Several teachers during my years of education were great inspirations to me. Becoming a teacher is my way of saying thank you to them. I also love to share my passion for the English language with my students. I have taught high school psychology and social studies, early childhood special education and middle school English. I chose to teach at The Summit for so many reasons. Two of my sisters are graduates of The Summit and had extraordinary experiences here. My children have attended The Summit for the past 4 years and are receiving an excellent education and personalized attention from their teachers. My aunt, Sister Stella Marie, was a Notre Dame Sister who lived on the 4th floor and taught math in the Upper School. Teaching here gives me the opportunity to share my talents and give back to this place that has given so much to my family. My philosophy is simple: meet the students where they are and bring them to where they could be! I always encourage my students to take the extra step and go beyond expectations. The teaching of character is very important to me as well. I use my curriculum to teach character: from the moment the students greet me at the door, to our discussion of themes in poetry and literature, to my emphasis on the importance of proper communication (spoken and written), I emphasize that fine character is most important. In addition to teaching my classes, I enjoy coaching the Power of the Pen team at the 8th grade level, working with students in our Writers' Club, and collaborating with my 8th grade colleagues to produce an 8th grade play for Campus Day. I have been married for 18 years to a wonderful man, John J. Alway, who works for The Andrew Jergens Company. I have 3 children: Alix (age 17), Maria (age 16), and Catherine (age 5). The College of Mount Saint Joseph, Education Certification: K-8 Teaching Experience: 37 years 27 years at The Summit I became a teacher because it was simply what I always wanted to be. There was never any doubt in my mind that I would become a teacher. My career began in a self contained classroom so I taught every subject, including music, art, and physical education. I chose to teach at The Summit because it gave me the opportunity to specialize in language arts which was always my first love. I was also looking for an opportunity to teach in a Catholic school. Each and every child is important to me, and I value what he or she brings into our classroom. I believe that my role must be to foster and encourage self confidence, an ability to self advocate, and a love of learning in each of my students. These are lifelong skills that will serve my students well in their futures. Outside of the classroom, I coach lacrosse, mentor a young writers' club, and I am a member of the educational consultancy team. I also work with Little Flower Parish on various projects. I recently attended the Ohio Middle School Conference in Columbus, Ohio. I am also certified as a Schools Attuned teacher after attending Mel Levine's A Mind at a Time Institute last year. I have been married to John DelFavero for 35 years. We have two children: Sean and Tricia, who graduated from the Summit. We also have a dog named Dani. Middle School 8th Grade Science Education: B.S. Wayne State University Working on Master's in Educational Administration Certifications: Middle Childhood grades 4-9 with a concentration in Science Teaching Experience: 7 years 5 years at The Summit I've often thought I had a special talent in relaying information to children. Teaching is a natural extension of that talent. Also, I realized I've admired the skills of teachers from whom I learned best. I incorporate their talents in my classroom. I have taught an all-inclusive sixth grade for two years in Michigan, two years of fifth grade language arts at The Summit and have moved on to teach eighth grade Science. When I interviewed with Dave Lewis, the former director of the Middle School, The Summit seemed very familiar to the schools I attended while growing up. I instantly felt like part of the community. My philosophy agrees with the statement, "All children can learn." Over the past few years, I have become attuned to their multiple intelligence levels. It's not a matter of If a child is smart, but how is that child smart? My job is to help each child find out how they are smart and utilize their gifts to make them responsible, independent thinkers. I have been married for over twelve years to my wonderful wife, Kelly. We have a terrific 3 year-old son, Tommy, who attends The Summit Montessori. Middle School Guidance Counselor Education: B.A. University of Cincinnati, English Literature M.Ed. and Clinical degree Xavier University, Counseling Certification: Religious Education Teaching Experience: 15 years 8 years at The Summit I began working professionally as a social worker and discovered what a large effect I had on younger children. This drew me to teaching. When former Middle School Director, Dave Lewis, contacted me about teaching at The Summit, I could not turn him down. I have quite a family connection here at The Summit as my wife, father-in-law and brother-in-law all taught here at one time. Coaching here for 6 years, I was always impressed by the well-rounded athletes. I fully believe that each student does not realize how powerful an effect they have upon their peers. I want to be sure that they learn this to become a positive and influential force in each others lives. My wife, Diane, and I have been blessed with three children - Carter, Alexis and Annie. I love doing anything outdoors- hiking, biking, camping, playing soccer- and I also enjoy reading.

I also coordinate and train the Middle School student Eucharistic Ministers. Most recently, I attended a workshop on Therapeutic Journaling. As part of my curriculum, the students regularly compose reflections in their private classroom journals. This workshop reenforced to me the validity and importance of journal writing and suggested various journaling techniques and topics. Outside of the classroom, my husband and I meet with engaged couples from our parish and administer the FOCCU Survey and then meet with them to discuss the results. I am also a Eucharistic Minister Coordinator and a member of Christ Renews His Parish Team 3. Our family hosted an exchange student from The Netherlands during our middle son's senior year of high school. Henk-Jan lived with us for about ten months and quickly became a member of our family. We visit back and forth about once a year. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Mike, for thirty years. We have three grown sons, two of whom are married. Our eldest son and his wife had a baby daughter last May, our first grandchild! Our youngest son is a Berry Scholar and Chemical Engineering major at the University of Dayton. Realizing that everyone is different, I have to communicate my teaching methods to reach all of my students. In doing so, I am hoping to have each of them reach his or her optimum success now and in the future to come. One of my most noteworthy professional endeavors includes participation in the Initiative for Catholic Schools Program at Xavier University. Middle School 5th, 6th and 8th Grade Art Education: B.S. University of Cincinnati, DAAP, Architecture M.A. University of Cincinnati, DAAP, Art Education Certification: Visual Art K-12 Teaching Experience: 5 years 4 years at The Summit I have always loved school, and every school subject has interested me in some way. I had a particular talent in and enjoyment for visual art, which led me to teach this subject. Since I was young, I have considered teaching. When I arrived in high school, I had a phenomenal Art teacher - ever since, I have wanted to teach Art. I realized that art could be so much more than just drawing - it opens up a whole new world in 2- and 3-dimensions. I took a short detour into Architecture, which I enjoyed very much. As I worked in firms in Cincinnati and Chicago, however, I realized that my true passion was educating others. I decided to earn my master's degree and began to teach fine art. I am grateful that life has led me on this journey and that I have arrived at The Summit! I chose to teach at The Summit because of the commitment the faculty and staff have to the students. This commitment is not only part of their teaching philosophy, but is demonstrated each day. When I interviewed for the Middle School Art teaching position, this commitment to student learning and character development came through clearly in the questions that were asked. I also chose The Summit for the students - I have a passion for teaching Art and it is very satisfying to teach such motivated, engaged, and creative individuals. Art is a vast subject - each student can find success, whether it be in 2-dimensional drawing or painting, 3-dimensional sculpture or ceramics, or computer-generated imagery. I strive to create a safe environment where each student feels comfortable expressing themselves in each medium that is presented. I attend the Ohio Art Education Association conference on a yearly basis. Often, I will participate as a conference presenter, speaking on various art education topics. I was also invited to be a guest speaker for the Art Education department at the University of Cincinnati (October 2006). I have a black and gray toy poodle named Baby (named and given to me by my grandfather). I enjoy painting, national and international travel, and reading.

When I was in second grade I taught my sister, who was in kindergarten, how to read. The amazing part about it was when she went to first grade they realized she was hearing impaired! When I was working with a teacher at St. Dominic whose son was a student at The Summit, she heard there was a job opening in the Primary and thought this place was the perfect match for my teaching style. She was really right! I have her to thank for the inspiration to come here. Outside of the classroom I support my students in things they do at school. I attend their basketball games among other things. I volunteer at my church with Interfaith Hospitality Network. Every six weeks our parish hosts homeless families. They live in our convent for one week. We provide food, laundry service, homework instruction, and craft activities. I work with the kids. Sometimes the very young parents join me! I also enjoying supporting The Leukemia Lymphoma Society. My children are training to bicycle 100 miles around Lake Tahoe in June. They aren't aware of it yet, but I hope to join them for the last 30 miles. They should be exhausted by that time and I should be able to keep up with them without looking too old! I have been married to Bill for 34 years. He is presently the principal of Guardian Angels School. I also have four wonderful children. My hobbies include reading, traveling, and quilting. I find them all to be extremely relaxing and something I learn from daily. My personal mission has always been to be a lifetime learner and "to improve the world I inherit." I believe I live that mission and I rejoice in seeing my own children and the children I teach, take part on that same path. It is so fun traveling together!

Before graduating, I completed a thematic sequence in math and did my capstone project in geometry. This fall I began my masters in educational leadership through Wright State University. I have always loved working with children and greatly enjoy the "teen" age. I enjoy helping people come to new conclusions and exploring new material. Putting these two passions together I have found the perfect profession. I choose to teach at The Summit because it is such a warm and welcoming community. Everyone is so friendly and helpful and the parents are all very supportive. I was also attracted to the Summit because of the small class sizes and its focus on individual students. I believe that every child has the ability to succeed. I am a proponent of a variety of learning styles. I believe that if the students are given the chance to explore the material through multiple venues they will be more likely to understand and retain the material. I feel it is important for students to discover math through the use of manipulatives and I encourage students to use critical thinking to apply what they already know to what is being learned. I coach the middle school girls tennis team. This fall I am also hoping to start a middle school boys tennis team. Currently, I am also part of a professional book club. The book club consists of teachers from neighboring schools and we read and discuss educational articles and newly published books. In the Summer of 2005, I married a wonderful husband. We are both teachers so we spend the summers and any vacation time traveling to places all over the world. This year we will be traveling to Australia!

My strong passion for Science and interacting with children made teaching a natural and ideal choice for me. That sparkle of excitement in a child's eyes is the greatest reward! I chose to come to The Summit because I value the tremendous support from parents, colleagues, and administrators, as well as small class sizes that foster a great deal of individualized attention. I also value the emphasis placed on character education; that is, the value of developing the child as a whole person. I facilitate learning moments in the science classroom by presenting engaging lessons that involve my students on multiple levels, and guide them toward developing good study and organization strategies. My goal is to create successful, lifelong learners that have an appreciation and interest in science. I am a member of the NSTA (National Science Teacher Association), and I recently attended their National Convention in Atlanta. I also recently attended a conference on Differentiated Instruction, as well as completing a course on Life Science Education for graduate credit. The Summit allows me to try innovative teaching methods. With the small class size, I am able to give more individual attention to my students. As a constructivist, I feel that children need to experience scientific concepts to make sense of them. They are constantly in the process of creating and refining concepts in my class. The past two summers I have participated in Earth Expeditions with the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens and Miami University. In addition, I worked with Project Dragonfly to help review inquiry lessons being developed for use at the Cincinnati Zoo. I have traveled to Namibia to study cheetah conservation. I have also visited Belize, where I studied the manatee, coral reef, howler monkey and Mayan forest ecology and conservation issues. I also learned inquiry methods of teaching science, and participatory education. In June, I attended "School's Attuned" training in Bath, Ohio. This program shows teachers how to identify the learning strengths and challenges of their students in order to help them succeed in school. Middle School 8th Grade Mathematics Education: B.Ed. University of Toledo, Secondary Education M.Ed. University of Cincinnati, Curriculum and Instruction specializing in Math Post- Masters Level coursework in Math Education Certification: Permanent Ohio Certification, English and Math (7-12) Teaching Experience: 24 years 10 years at The Summit My mother taught high school math and my aunt was an elementary teacher and principal. Both of them taught me by example the importance of having teachers who are committed to their students and passionate about their subject matter. The Summit's academic reputation was the initial draw for me. When I first saw our beautiful chapel and met some of the faculty and staff members. I felt an absolutely overwhelming sense that I was called to be here. I believe that the best learning occurs in an environment that encourages students to wrestle with new concepts and to ask questions. Students who feel as though their questions will be addressed become more willing to ask questions and become more confident in their own ability to learn math. Specifically, I believe that math books need to come with math teachers! It is my role to translate the language of the textbook into language and demonstrations for students to grasp more easily. Here at The Summit, I am the 8th grade level team leader, Middle School Math Curriculum Coordinator, and Middle School Representative to the LPDC. I am currently a member of Phi Delta Kappa Education Honorary Society. I also serve as The Summit's teacher representative to ISACS, OAIS, and the OAIS' Teacher Services Committee. I represent The Summit and OAIS as a state representative to the ISACS' Professional Services Committee. I have been married to Douglas Varick since 1990. We have two dogs: Bailey (a 9-year-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever) and Cassie (a 4-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel). Some of my hobbies include interior decorating and sewing, "power shopping", and target shooting (I'm a good shot!). I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2001. I spent three weeks in Japan as a guest of the Japanese government. We visited schools at the elementary, junior high, high school, and community college level in Japan as well as visiting cultural sites and enjoying the local (sushi and noodles!) restaurants.

I have been captivated by the learning process ever since. I have taught language arts, social studies, math, study skills, SAT prep, strategy simulations, values, and kindergarten. The choice of The Summit was a family choice. We were attracted to its sense of community and values. Personally, the emphasis on the individual child suited my teaching style. My philosophy in teaching is to give the child the courage to have a voice and something to say. The rest will come. I also strongly believe in using a variety of teaching strategies since each child has a unique way of learning. I support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Teams in Training through raising funds and participating in the walks. I also adopt a child through Children International. There I found how much fun it is to work in a school library and began taking library classes at night. In high school I worked in the school library as well as working as a page in a public library. I had always heard great things about The Summit as far as academics so I was happy to become a part of the faculty. I want the library to be a place where the students are welcomed and feel comfortable. The students are encouraged to give suggestions for books to be purchased for the library. That is one way they can take ownership and feel a part of the Tyrrell Library. Each year I usually attend the Oelma Conference in Columbus, Ohio. I also go to the main public library each spring for the Check It Out program during which the public librarians tell about the best new children's books available. I will also attend a BER conference entitled Strategies for Strengthening Your School Library Program. My husband and I were married for thirty-six years and have two children, Amy and David. I challenge each child to put forth their God-given gifts. I want to develop each child both spiritually and artistically. Lower School 4th Grade Education: B.A. Education from Wilmington College Certification: 1-8 Elementary Education Teaching Experience: 13 years 13 years at The Summit My inspiration for teaching has always come from what I consider a true calling to work with children and a love of learning. I came to The Summit after my husband, Emil Nelson, was hired to teach Social Studies in the Middle School. At the time, we were living in Wilmington, Ohio and he had also been offered a job there. We both viewed The Summit as a wonderful opportunity for him and our children. I then proceeded to work as a substitute here for the next two years. When the 4th grade Language Arts position opened up, I jumped at the opportunity. What an amazing and unique opportunity for our family! I would be able to work with my husband and be with my children throughout their education. This school is more than a place to teach, it is our extended family. I believe it is so vital that children are in an environment where they feel safe and respected. Learning is a creative process. Children need to experiment with different methods to find how they learn best. It is so important to learn the fundamentals, but it takes on more meaning when they become a part of the learning experience. Ultimately, I want my students to approach new challenges with a sense of curiosity and wonder. I have three children- Sierra is 15 and a sophomore in the Upper School. Rowan is 13 and an 8th grader in the Middle School. Tiernan is 8 and in 3rd grade in the Lower School. I have a ferocious guard dog, my 8 lb. Chihuahua, Buffy. I also have a motley crew of cats - Peppermint, Persephone, and Pip. My new favorite hobby is Raks Balady, otherwise known as belly dancing.

Lower School 2nd Grade Education: B.S. Eastern Michigan, Elementary Education 20 additional hours of graduate credit Certification: K-8 Teaching Experience: 22 years 7 years at The Summit Hello, I am Susan Flaig. I have enjoyed teaching second grade at Summit for six years. My teaching experience also includes teaching third grade at St. Gertrude in Madeira for six years, first grade for three years, and kindergarten for three years. I have been a private tutor and taught nursery school. Although I have not been a classroom teacher exclusively, I have been involved in education for over thirty years. I was involved in many volunteer organizations like Catholic Women of Cincinnati, while at home when our family was young. I was also deeply involved in parish activities at that time, such as President of the parent group and Parish Council. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University. I have acquired numerous graduated courses and continuing education credits throughout my teaching career. I am currently taking a religious education course through the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to continue working towards permanent catechist certification. While teaching at Summit I have had the opportunity to serve as Language Arts coordinator for second grade. I was asked to participate on a committee of teachers from all divisions to examine the learning style needs of the students of our school in 2004-05. We worked throughout the year, under the leadership of Joseph Devlin to determine how we can better serve all learners at Summit. We planned in service opportunities for the faculty in this area. I attended The Schools Attuned Workshop in Akron during the summer of 2005. This week long conference was based on Mel Levine's theories of 'how children learn' and how the brain works. I enjoy continuing my education because life is a journey of learning. I am a native of Michigan, but have resided in Cincinnati with my husband Jim for thirty years. We have been blessed with five lovely children. Amanda and her husband Nick live in Cleveland where she in Vice President of Media Relations for the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Nick is doing his residency at the Cleveland Clinic. Emily and her husband Matt live in Ft. Thomas, Ky. Matt is an engineer and Emily is a physical therapist. They recently welcomed Evelyn Kaylee, our first grandchild, into the family. Laura lives in New Jersey, and works as a product manager for Macy's corporate offices in New York City. Adam, our only son, is a senior at Ohio University studying audio and visual production. Elyse is a junior at Sycamore and looks forward to pursuing a career in the equine field. She has participated in summer mission trips with the Good Shepherd youth group for three years, and she is planning to go to West Virginia this summer. Our family pet is Scout, a 13 year old Gordon Setter. We have raised our family in Blue Ash, and truly enjoy living in this great community.

Lower School 1st Grade Education: B.A. Miami University M.Ed. Xavier University Certification: K-12 Teaching Experience: 27 years 23 years at The Summit I have always wanted to be a teacher. I loved "playing school" when I was little. I had a classroom set up and made my younger brothers be my students. I was in a graduate class with Bob Gorey's wife and she told me about an opening at The Summit. I remember driving past the beautiful building on Grandin Road, hoping that this was the place for me. Twenty one years later and I'm still here! My goal is to provide fun and enriching activities where the needs of each child are being met. I hope I motivate the students to do their best and be proud of their accomplishments. I want school to be a place in which they look forward to coming. I have attended a number of conferences focused on the first grader and the needs of first grade learners. I am excited to be attending a conference this fall which will enhance our math program. I married my tennis teacher, Mike. Our family has grown to include a big gray dog named Ali and our beautiful daughter, Erin. Ali is my walking buddy through all kinds of weather. Erin has brought us immeasurable joy and I love spending time with her. I like to read and work in my garden. I love the Reds, Redhawks, Xavier basketball and the Bengals.

Lower School 1st Grade Education: B.A. University of Arizona Certification: K-8 Teaching Experience: 19 years 8 years at The Summit My love, passion and devotion to children inspired me to become a teacher. When I attended first grade in Cleveland, Ohio, my teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. My response was to be a teacher. We then made an illustration. My mother saved it, framed it, and gave it back to be when I got my first teaching job. The Summit is a wonderful institution with a great reputation, small class sizes, great colleagues and fantastic parents. The students are challenged on a daily basis and consistently worked with on a individualized basis. I absolutely love the fact that I have the flexibility of implementing new ideas into the current curriculum. I apply my philosophy to the learning experience of teaching; to promote success and a positive self-image in my students. Education is the basis to everything we do. My teaching effectiveness is implemented through the practice of a variety of organizational strategies. There are many trends in education today. Change, new methods, materials and technology are developing continually. With my awareness and knowledge of these trends, I am willing to apply new techniques to improve my teaching strategies. The field of education is very challenging and rewarding. I have done a lot of course work affiliated with education: Differentiated Instruction, Responsive Classroom, First Grade Instruction, Literacy, Math with Marcy Cook, and Classroom Management Systems. I have two daughters: Abby ,17 and Stephanie, 13 who both attend Sycamore. We have a dog and a hamster. I am a Wizard of Oz and Just the Right Shoe collector, and I love to dance, read, and cook.

As a teacher I believe in the necessity of global education for the next generation. I strive to teach my students to become multi-lingual and multi-culturally sensitive. I believe in student-centered education, meeting each child at his or her own level and building on their strengths. I try to present activities that stimulate students and encourage participation. In doing so I encourage multiple approaches, including technology, to meet the various individuals present in a classroom, in order to make the classes meaningful for each one of my students. This approach surrounds my belief that education should be based on a cooperation between the family, the teacher and the administration to promote a harmonious growth of each student. Outside of The Summit, I have been part of an effort to send school supplies to schools in rural parts of my native country, Romania. I also take advantage of various workshops that allow me to stay updated in my teachings, both generally and in the foreign languages. I am married with one son (a Summit graduate) and a daughter (a Summit student). I love traveling, the outdoors (hiking, skiing, biking), reading and music. 23 Years in Teaching 21 Years at The Summit When third-grade teacher Stacy Remke was teaching a unit on spiders to her class, she turned to an unusual scientific resource: Charlotte's Web. "When you're teaching science to young children, it's much easier to make the light go on if you use material that has a personal connection for them," explains Stacy. "Because Charlotte is a character who's familiar to the students, I can use her life story to help introduce other concepts about spiders as a species." For Stacy, being a great teacher means going the extra mile to ensure that every student in her class moves forward at the right pace. "I work hard to make learning fun for my students, but I also monitor their progress carefully," she explains. "For example, when we're dealing with a new math concept, I do individual assessments, identify students who may need remedial help, and then pair up students according to their skill level." Her Follow-through is Outstanding - In recognition of her devotion to students at The Summit over the past 17 years, Stacy was named the recipient of the 2004 Raymond E. Schilderink Family Faculty Chair for Distinguished Teaching. "Where Stacy really shines is in her attention to the unique needs of each student, the individual as opposed to the group," notes Lower School Director, Grades 1-4, Clare King. "Her follow-through is just outstanding." "As a teacher, I know I'm accountable for making sure my students know what they need to know," she says. "At the same time, I appreciate that The Summit is very open to using different ideas and techniques to make concepts meaningful, whether it's a field trip, a group exercise, or a classic children's novel." The Teacher as Student - Whether it's enrolling in professional development programs or participating in technology workshops at The Summit, Stacy excels as a teacher because she also excels as a student. "It's important for me to grow as an educator, and to discover new techniques that reflect the evolving needs of my students. That's why I'm so excited about the science lab in the new Lower School. I use a hands-on approach to science, and I'm sure the new facility will provide many opportunities to craft engaging learning experiences for my class."

I have always loved working with children and helping them reach their fullest potential. I chose The Summit for several reasons. I, of course, wanted to teach at the best school in the city. I also believe in Catholic education with a strong focus on serving others. I was able to find all of that here! There is nowhere I would rather be. I want to inspire children to be well rounded, educated, loving citizens of the world. I believe it is important to teach children the importance of helping others and making the world a better place for everyone. I want the children in my class to love learning and every day at school. Children should be guided by their teacher to create learning that meets their individual needs. I spent a year doing the Jesuit Volunteer Corps working with homeless women and children. That year inspired me to always help others. I volunteer regularly at the Center for Respite Care here in Cincinnati. I have trained for a triathlon and raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. I am always involved in something in an effort to do my part! I enjoy competing in Triathlons in my spare time, so I spend a lot of time swimming, biking and running.

My children were already attending The Summit when I decided to teach here. I already knew it was a great school. I love being in their environment. My approach to early music education is process-oriented. I believe children can learn by doing. We focus on steady beat and singing in tune. In the primary grades I use an Orff-Schulwerk based approach, which again involves active participation in music. We sing, play instruments, move, and learn about composers in an active, fun way. Musical literacy is an important component of the Primary music curriculum. Outside of The Summit, I am the Music Director at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, Kentucky. Over the Summer, I received two Evans grants. I also received training in "Music Together," an early childhood curriculum. I also took a workshop about how to improve children in music liturgy. Lower School Art Education: B.FA Art Education from the University of Cincinnati Certification: K-12 Teaching Experience: 33 years 13 years at The Summit I grew up knowing that I was going to be an Art Teacher. I have always taught in the independent schools, valuing the freedom to teach that they afford one. So, upon my return to Cincinnati, I was looking for a school that was like my previous Cincinnati experience (Seven Hills) and was thrilled to find that The Summit was looking for an art teacher. I felt I was a good fit for the job and thankfully The Summit agreed. I have been so happy with this teaching experience. My young students come to me as artists and my job is to keep them artists by building and developing their art skills. I believe that every art program needs as its components art criticism, art production, and art history as the means of building the art skills. Art is about risk taking and the willingness to keep trying and to keep evaluating one's efforts. Our students do this so well, they are open to the challenges and continue to amaze me with their talent and creativity. In the summer of 2005, my husband Mark and I received a grant from the National Gallery of Art to participate in their Story Telling Art Workshops. I am involved with the Ohio Art Education Association and am currently on their Convention Planning Committee. I am married to Mark Wiesner, the Upper School art teacher and between us we have five children, nine grandchildren and one rescued greyhound. Lower School- Montessori Head Teacher Education: B.A. and M. Ed. Xavier University, Montessori Education Certification: Ohio Certification and Non-tax Preschool to third grade American Montessori Society Certification, Ages 3-6 Teaching Experience: 36 years 31 years at The Summit I love working with children and hope to guide them to a love of learning. I have done this through teaching math, language, science, social studies, geography, religion, art and music -- all in the Montessori method. I chose The Summit after doing my student teaching here. My grandmother and inspiration, Antoinette Daly Homan, was a 1916 graduate of The Summit. I was also taught in grade school by Notre Dame Sisters and was inspired by them and their devotion to the school. Children learn by using all their senses. They also have a high level of concentration, a strong sense of order, and times in their development when they are more sensitive to absorbing specific concepts. At an early age, children can learn to make choices, to lead and take responsibility for their own learning and to reach their maximum potential. I am married to Larry Humpert, an architect with A.M. Kinney. I have four children: Joe, a Summit and University of Illinois graduate; Teddy, a Summit graduate and junior at Ohio University; Matt, a senior at The Summit and Mark , a freshman at The Summit. I am involved in Matt's and Mark's high school activities, especially the boys' soccer team. I enjoy gardening, knitting, reading and running.

However, I love The Summit because of its spiritual awareness and character- building emphasis. As a teacher, I must continue to evolve as a person. It is important to weed out my character weaknesses and strive towards excellence by focusing on my gifts. Humility, Kindness and Intelligence are key ingredients in my teaching. This summer I participated in the Positive Discipline Workshop. It was very powerful and beneficial towards my role at The Summit. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I have been given the opportunity to coach our athletic teams at The Summit. Lower School-Montessori Head Teacher All-day Advanced Enrichment Class Education: B.S. Ohio State University Certification: AMS Montessori Certification ages 3-6 Ohio state five year license to teach K-8 Teaching Experience: 25 years 24 years at The Summit I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I met some! My kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Schmidt and I loved her! My youngest brother was five years old when I entered Ohio State and he became my "experimental" kindergarten child. I was privileged to accompany him on many field trips and help his class with projects. I taught 3-4 year olds at a preschool my first year out of college and then found my "home," The Summit! I saw an ad for a middle school Science or Math position at The Summit and called in for that position. After hearing my experience, I was offered a position in the Montessori as an assistant. What I found was an amazing philosophy and school. Not only did I further my education to get my 3-6 Montessori degree, I also found a home and school for my daughters, who are now lifers at The Summit. In the past, I have been actively involved in the summer camp program. I also volunteer when I can for various SPA events. Outside of the classroom, I have helped the parish collect various food stuffs and Christmas gifts. I have volunteered to teach preschool religion classes over the years. My husband and I also donate to United Way as well as The Summit. This summer I attended a full-day workshop at Wilmington College on Positive Discipline. This was funded through the James Evans Grant Program at The Summit. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Jim, and we have two girls who are lifers at the Summit. Jim and I have been married for 21 years. I was married the same year I started at The Summit. My daughter Marie is a senior and Rachel is in eighth grade. We have two dogs, both Golden Retrievers: Clifford, 14 and Buster, 4. I enjoy going to my children's sporting and school events. I also enjoy reading and music of all types. I have been blessed to work at the Summit. The school and its community is an integral part of my life. I am so happy to be a part of The Summit community doing something that I have always wanted to do - teach kindergarten! It is extra special that my two girls are with me and I have fabulous colleagues!

Lower School-Montessori Teaching Assistant Education: B.S. Education Nine hours towards Masters Certification: K-8 Teaching Experience: 17 years 17 years at The Summit When I interviewed with the Montessori director, Phyllis Schueler, I liked her right away. My interview with Ed Tyrrell revealed his love for The Summit and I perceived he had a real sense of fairness and professional expectation from people who taught and worked here. Then, when I stepped into the beautiful chapel, I had a sense of belonging and I feel that every time I walk through there. It is a wonderful thing to be able to spend some moments with God during the work day. I believe that each child should be treated by their teacher as if he or she were their own child. The child needs love, understanding, and a sense of safety and well being at school. Also, they should have high expectations for themselves as well as their teachers. Teaching at The Summit is wonderful because of the hard-working people here(especially my co-worker, Linda Moeggenberg), the caring parents, and most of all, the children. I have been married for 40 years with two married daughters and one adorable grandson. Recently, we lost our dog, Boris to cancer. I enjoy reading, travel and golf.

Lower School-Montessori Head Teacher Education: B.S.N. Otterbein College, Nursing M.Ed. Xavier University, Early Childhood Education Certification: Pre-K- 3 Teaching Experience: 10 years 9 years at The Summit When my husband and I were transferred to Cincinnati with his job, our realtor suggested The Summit Country Day School. We placed our children, Brianna and Gabriel here. When I saw what they were learning in the Montessori school I was very impressed. I began to substitute in the Montessori and after one year decided that I wanted to go back to school to get a Masters in Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Montessori learning. I was intrigued by the level of dedication and creative expression in education. I was also impressed with the children I knew who attended The Summit, and the level of maturity and knowledge they possessed. My teaching philosophy stems from the belief that children should be allowed to explore our world in a fun and exciting environment and to provide as many experiences as possible. I like to open the world up to our children while having an understanding of the roles and responsibilities in life. I believe children should know that we are responsible to and for each other as reflected in the teachings of Christ. I am very involved with my parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Anderson. I am currently working with the 7th grade Boy Scouts on the Catholic Religious emblem Ad Altare Dei. In the community, I am the coordinator for the State of Ohio Board of Education required PRAXIS III assessment process. I work with newly graduated teachers or those who have transferred from another state who now teach at The Summit. I also serve as the recording secretary to the LPDC committee. I have been married to Kevin for 25 years, we have two adopted children who are only 5 months 3 days apart in age! We also have a sweet dog, Oreo, who is a border collie/lab mix. I enjoy reading, sewing, and scrapbooking.

Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, piano accompanying Certification: K-12 Teaching Experience: 23 years 9 Years at The Summit In the past, I have taught High School Choral Music, Music Theory, K - 8 general music, Kindermusik (music program for preschool children), as well as piano and piano-related courses at Xavier University. I have been married to Jeff for 20 years. We have two boys attending The Summit and two cats.

Psychology Certification: Montessori and Spanish Teaching Experience: 32 years 23 years at The Summit I was inspired to become a teacher because of my love for children and desire to make a significant difference in their lives. I wanted to be part of an institution that offered students the opportunity to develop their character, as well as receiving an excellent academic and Catholic education. I believe in being a passionate, enthusiastic and motivated educator who provides a link to help my students discover a new language and cultural world. I want my students to experience the joy of learning and to develop confidence in their ability to speak another language and interact with people from a different culture, so that they can be our future ambassadors to the world. Here at The Summit, I am a member the Curriculum Coordinators Committee, the Team Leaders Committee, and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. I also help provide financial assistance and educational materials to underprivileged children in Colombia. Last year I attended the following workshops and conferences: Connecting to Other Cultures through Languages workshop, Learning and the Brain conference, Really Learning! Upper School Chemistry Education: B.S. University of Dayton, Chemistry M.S. St. Louis University M.D. University of St. Michael's Additional Coursework: Hope College, Princeton University, University of Houston and Miami University Certifications: Latin, Chemistry, Physical Science, Theology Teaching Experience: 41 years 22 years at The Summit My wife is a Summit graduate so she receives the Summit quarterly mailings. Their great grandmother, Grace Dolle, graduated from the Summit in 1901. I enjoy performing chemical demonstrations for the public and have been involved with the American Chemical Society's outreach programs for most of my teaching career.

Other Information:
Gordon, a 1989 graduate, was a member of the football and track teams while at Princeton High School. He was the Superintendent’s Cup recipient in both sports his senior year. He is also a 2006 inductee into the Princeton High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
As a wide receiver, Gordon was a member of the 1987 State Football Championship team and Co-Captain of the 1988 State Football Championship Runner-Up team. During his senior season, Gordon set then-school records for receiving yards in a game and in a season. His post-season recognition included being named to the 1st Team All-Conference, All-City and 2nd Team All-State rosters, along with selection to the Enquirer/WCPO East-West All-Star game.
A long-sprinter, Gordon ran on the 1988 4 x 800m relay team that finished 2nd in the state championship meet, and followed that up by leading off the State Championship quartet in the same race in 1989. That relay ran the 3rd fastest in the country for the season, as noted in the USA Today rankings. He also qualified for the State meet in the 400m dash and 4x400m relay in his senior year. Gordon received All-Conference and All-City recognition for track during his sophomore, junior and senior years. Along with All-State honors his junior and senior years.
After graduating from Princeton, he attended Miami University where he played football and ran track. He was a member of the 1993 Mid-American Conference Championship Team. During the championship meet, he scored points in the 400m, 800m, and anchored the winning 4x400m relay. He was captain of the track team his senior year at Miami.
Gordon continued to compete after receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Miami in 1994. He also began working at track clinics at the University of Cincinnati for high school athletes, and has provided individual instruction in the areas of speed improvement and overall conditioning. Gordon still competes in Masters (age-group) Track Meets, finishing 3rd in the 400m and 800m at the 2004 USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
Gordon possesses a passion for athletics, and has a wealth of knowledge and desire to help others. He believes that great things can be accomplished with a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and a will to succeed. Gordon looks forward to every opportunity to work with athletes of all ages to help them achieve their goals, both on and off the playing fields.
This is Gordon's second year coaching at The Summit!

32 Years at The Summit
Upper School Art Education: B.A. Edgecliff College M.A.R. Athenaeum of Ohio Certification: Visual Arts K-12 Teaching Experience: 33 years 33 years at The Summit I have had several instrumental teachers in my life who inspired and supported me in my pursuit of being a teacher of Art. The Summit supports growth not just within its student body but also on behalf of its faculty and staff. Each year I can genuinely say that I gladly re-choose to teach at The Summit because of its level of support shown for my personal and professional growth. Because of my belief that Art is indeed another language, I work to craft lessons that not only encourage skill development but also promote the development of a personal voice. Outside of the classroom, I am a reader for the Radio Reading Service, Cincinnati Association for the Blind and the Visually Impaired. I currently serve as the Regional Director of the Southwest Ohio Art Education Association. I am married to the Lower School Art teacher, Jan Wiesner. Between us we have five children, eight grandchildren, and a very spoiled greyhound named Joey.

Upper School Religion Education: B.A. College of Mount Saint Joseph, English/ Religious Studies M.Ed. Xavier University, Educational Administration Certification: Religious Studies, English, Administration Teaching Experience: 19 years 3rd year at The Summit There are many teachers and school administrators in my family's history. Additionally, I had a cousin-of-sorts as my 5th grade teacher. She is a wonderful person and a true role-model of mine. I have taught religion courses such as: Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, Church History, Understanding Catholic Christianity, Morality and Sexuality, Social Justice, World Religions, Christian Lifestyles, Death and Christian Hope and English. I was hired to teach at The Summit a few days before the start of the school year. I feel truly blessed to be a part of such a marvelous school. I feel that I have achieved a very personal aspiration in being a part of this faculty. Thank you! Students learn best when they know they matter. If we marinate them in compassion, kindness, and education, they will be outstanding adults. I will be working with the KAIROS program and liturgical music here at The Summit. Additionally, I managed the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Cincinnati for 2 years. I have been married for 15 years. The Lord hasn't blessed us with children... but with an adorable dog named Sneaker.
