POWER OF THE PEN
Congratulations to the 7th and 8th graders who competed in the Power of the Pen Regional Tournament which was held at Sycamore Junior High School. (7th grade writers included: Katie Woodall, Ellie Cooney, Regina Merrill, and Emily Hogya. 8th grade writers included Natalie Whitsett, Anna Delamerced, Carolyn Boyce, Maya Marlette, and Alex Evans).

There are three amazing achievements we would like to share with you:
Emily Hogya placed 1st place out of the 117 writers competing at the seventh grade level. She received a rank score of 1 from every judge who scored her work. AMAZING!!!

Emily Hogya also earned a Best of Round award for her story entitled Individual. This story will go on to be read against all of the other regional Best of Round winners in Ohio to compete for a Best of the Best Award at the state tournament in May.

Regina Merrill’s Best of Round story from District Tournament entitled Ballroom for Beginners won a Best of the Best award. This is a very prestigious award as her story will now be published in the Power of the Pen Book of Winners. 7th and 8th grade English teachers across Ohio use this book not only to prepare their teams for Power of the Pen tournaments, but also to share excellent examples of creative writing with students in the classroom.

These accomplishments have earned Emily and Regina a ticket to compete at the State Power of the Pen tournament in May!

SPELLING BEE
On Saturday, March 1st Summit eighth grader Anna Delamerced won the WCPO-TV sponsored Southwest Ohio Regional Spelling Bee held at the Duke Energy Center. Anna qualified for the regional bee by winning The Summit Middle School Bee in January. Anna maintained her calm composure throughout the entire bee while spelling through 13 rounds of words in front of a packed house. Anna beat out the other 180 spellers in her region by spelling the following series of words: abdicate, recidivist, dreidel, nadir, finesse, gestation, digitalis, vacuole, andante, deleterious, truncheon, accolade. Accolade was a rather fitting final word; she certainly deserves many! In addition to winning a new Webster’s Dictionary, Anna won an expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Bee in May.

GEOGRAPHY BEE
Summit fifth grader Nicolas Montag has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2008 Ohio Geographic Bee. Earlier competitions have been held in Ohio’s middle and elementary schools to determine each school’s Geography Bee winner. Nicolas was The Summit Country Day Middle School’s champion, defeating the school’s fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.

Nicolas then took a qualifying test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society. His score was judged to be one of Ohio’s top 100 marks, thus qualifying him to compete at the state level. The Summit Country Day Middle School has been competing in the Geography Bee for the past fifteen years and Nicolas is the school’s first state representative; an amazing accomplishment for a fifth grader!

The 2008 Ohio Geography Bee will be held at the Ohio State University, Mansfield Branch on Friday, April 4, 2008. Ohio’s state winner will receive $100, a globe, and a trip to Washington D.C., where he (hopefully Nicolas) will represent the state in the national finals at the National Geographic headquarters, May 20-21, 2008. The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship.
