The Scoop from the Lower School - Clare King
03/01/07
As we begin the month of March, I’m sure we are all anticipating spring and warmth. Despite the cold and snow of February, there were many accomplishments. The first-and second-grade students began the month with the performance of two musical plays, Chicken Licken and The Selfish Giant. The students did an excellent job under the direction of our music teacher, Becky Slater, as they demonstrated their musical talent and skill through vocalization, rhythm, dance, and use of the Orff Instruments.
We were recently notified that several of the Lower School students received recognition for their art talent. Emily Favorito and Samantha Hunt both had ceramic relief sculptures accepted into the National Ceramic Competition. Tiernan Nelson’s self-portrait paper collage will be included in the exhibition for Youth Art Month. Elena Montag had a pastel piece based on the artist Georgia O’Keeffe selected to be on display in the Young People’s Art Exhibition. On the state level in the Art Criticism category, the following students have been recognized: Tiernan Nelson (1st Place), Calvin Acker (2nd Place), and Zachary Pavlin (3rd Place). We congratulate our art teacher, Jan Wiesner, and all of the students!
There was also time for prayer and reflection as we began the penitential season of Lent with a special Liturgy on Ash Wednesday. On February 15, we celebrated with the second grade students as they received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. A dramatic presentation of The Prodigal Son and Daughter added very special meaning to the beautiful prayer service.
Black History Month was recognized and celebrated within art, social studies, language arts, music, and religion classes. A major highlight was a special performance of Harriet’s Journey by Children’s Theatre ArtReach. In the interactive workshop, the students were told and acted out the early life of Harriet Tubman through a combination of music, drama, and movement.
As March approaches, we are all looking forward to this year’s auction: A Knight of Silver Jubilation! We express our deep appreciation to the auction chairpersons: Pam Noe and Kim David, their committees, and countless volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy throughout the year in preparation for this very special event.
The third graders are excitedly preparing for their musical: The Emperor’s New Clothes, which will take place on March 8 and 9. The students and Mrs. Slater are busy rehearsing, and I’m sure we will be treated to a wonderful performance.
Math Family Night has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 14. It will be a great opportunity to do some problem solving, art, music, and a variety of fun activities with the children to enrich their experience of mathematics.
We will conclude the month with the Multicultural Festival which will focus on four countries: China, Columbia, Germany, and Nigeria. Throughout the week of March 26, the students will visit exhibits, attend performances, and learn about the language, customs, and life of families and children in these four countries.
