The Scoop from the Athletic Department

02/01/07

So far, the Winter Sports Season has been very promising for Summit Athletics. Competition has been at its best in basketball, wrestling and swimming. Our student athletes have met every challenge with much success. We’re looking forward to the Athletic Awards Banquet, which will take place on Feb. 27th at 7:00pm in Kyte Theatre.

Boys’ Basketball:

The Summit Boys’ Varsity Basketball team, despite a rash of early season injuries and illnesses, successfully defeated division-rival Seven Hills in a double-overtime match on January 12th. The big win put them in first place in the MVC. The game was covered by WCPO, Channel 9, as the I-Wireless Game of the Week. The team is 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the MVC. Three of the team’s recent wins came on the road in league play, including an early season win against Scarlet Division-rival CHCA. Winning at home for the remainder of the season will be crucial to maintaining top standing in the MVC.

The 8th grade boys’ basketball team has had a successful start to the season going 4 -1 in the league and 4 - 2 overall. Our only loss in the league so far was a one-point loss to CHCA. We have had great contributions by all our guys and seem to be coming together as a group as the season goes along. Come support the Knights as they try to bring home a middle school championship!

Girls’ Basketball:

The Summit Girls’ Varsity Basketball team is currently 8-3, with a recent win over Div. 1 Campbell County High School. Summit will be fighting to win a league championship with big games ahead versus CHCA (Jan. 22nd and Feb. 3rd) and Seven Hills (Feb. 7th). The team is led by Sophomore guard Alyssa Dunn (16.4 ppg), Sophomore Forward Ashley Hite (13.2 ppg) and Sophomore Guard Kyli Parker (10.6 ppg).

The Middle School Girls’ 7th grade basketball team headed into Christmas break with a 4-2 record defeating Miami Valley Christian (19-18), St. Bernard (15-6), Cincinnati Country Day (26-7), and New Miami (28-7). After a couple weeks off they came back and lost a tough game against Nagel. With more than half of the game schedule left, we are confident that this will be a rewarding and winning season. The dedication and practice from the girls is what makes this such a strong team.

Wrestling:

In the second year of wrestling’s new beginning at The Summit, the Silver Knights return to the mat hoping in efforts to rebuild the program even stronger than before. Building participation is a large part of the recipe for success. The Summit could always use more members on the team. At the Grade 7-12 level the program boasts 19 wrestlers (up from 10 last season) In addition, none of those wrestlers are juniors or seniors. Our young men should be commended for their hard work and dedication to the program, participating in the “world’s oldest sport.”

Swimming:

Small but mighty! The Summit Swim team has gotten off to a great start this season. This year’s participants are: Bryan and Brad Bedacht, Lauren Dean, Maggie David, Liz Edwards, and Alex Hart. Recently, the team competed at the Southwest Classic meet. Bryan Bedacht made it back to finals and placed 12th overall. At our site we had five top 20 finishes. All swimmers who competed had a successful meet with a total of 14 combined seconds dropped in individual events.
