The Scoop from the Athletic Department - Mr. Gregory Dennis

05/01/07

Spring Sports are in full effect, despite the odd weather. Who would’ve thought that April showers would be snow instead of rain? The cold temperatures may have damaged growth of new flowers. However, it had no impact on the spirit of our student athletes who’ve persevered through it all!

BASEBALL:

The Silver Knights started the season off with a win against the Hughes Center. They had a 5-6 record by the end of week 2 and took off to Disney during Spring Break, where they played their best baseball of the season – leaving Florida with three wins and one loss. Although the team is low in numbers, each member is dedicated to ending on a winning note. The Boys’ Baseball program is led by Head Coach Andy Poli who is taking on his final season at The Summit. His support comes by way of Associate Head Coach Triffon Callos, Assistant Coach Donny Nagel, Junior Varsity Coach Mike Shannon and Middle School Coach Ryne McCormick. We thank Coach Andy Poli for all of this hard work, dedication and leadership.

LACROSSE:

Boys’ Varsity lacrosse is back with a very zealous desire to repeat winning the State Championship this year. The coaches and players take pride in a recent victory over Seven Hills, 13-7. The team is led by Seniors Will Edwards, Jack Gardner, Sean Jack, Zach Kling, Kyle Maloney, and Anshul Srivastava.

The Summit Girls’ Varsity lacrosse team at the mid- point of their third season is five wins and one losses against teams within the MVC conference. The leading point scorers are senior Lauren Jantsch and juniors Kailey Farmer and Alex Thurner. The defensive play of seniors Virginia Schmidt and Megan Przezdiziecki, backed up by junior Caroline Evelo, have held Summit’s opponents to low scores in the winning games. Freshman Lizzy Edwards, Maggie David, Sari Farmer and Brianne Ward have contributed in many games and will continue to build the legacy. The balance of the regular season will see exciting games against teams from Seven Hills, CHCA and Lakota. The coaching staff of Sam Adams, Liz May and Megan Sanders are helping Head Coach Walt Haag develop the players into a team that has a goal of winning its conference this year.

The Middle School Boys’ lacrosse team is made up of a small number of boys committed to doing their best. Most times they are outnumbered but still continue on. Their hard work and never-quit attitude has already led to a quadruple-overtime victory. With many more games left to be played, we look forward to more excitement and continued improvement.

SOFTBALL:

The Summit Silver Knights Girls’ Varsity softball team has had a tough start of the season. Poor weather has limited the number of game opportunities for them. Although they’ve had several tough losses, they continue to strive towards improving the consistency of their defense. The team has many young and inexperienced student athletes. The coaching staff, led by Head Coach Laura Haas and Assistant Coaches Johanna Johnson and Crosley Johnson, are committed to encouraging the girls to work hard and develop skills needed to improve getting the ball in play and getting on base. They are very proud of the girls’ efforts and dedication to the team.

BOYS TENNIS:

This year’s team is deep in talent and numbers. We have eighteen hard-working, enthusiastic guys on the team. The team elected seniors Jared Dunmon and Patrick Whalen to lead them and serve as Captains. The two other seniors on the team are Dan Madden and Stephen Zabrecky. The juniors are Luke Birk, Michael Bruns, Chris Burke, Nick Corser, and Trevor Stengel. The sophomores are Sam Arnold and Danny Bastin. The Summit Boys’ tennis team has been bolstered by seven incoming freshman players: Christian Bruns, Sam Chasnoff, Evan Dunmon, Nicolas Posada, Andre Roulliard, Clay Stein, and Michael Van Sant.

The new coaching staff is: Head Coach Rod Hildebrandt, Assistant Junior Varsity Coach Mark Parr and Assistant Junior Varsity Coach Maggie Nafziger. The coaches are very pleased with the talent, positive approach and strong work ethic the boys have brought to the courts.

TRACK & FIELD:

The Silver Knights Track & Field program is taking on new heights. The team has already competed in several meets: Lasalle Early Bird Meet, Lockland Dual Meet, Fairfield Coaches’ Classic and Eastmoor Invitational. Both the girls and boys are showing tremendous improvement despite competing against Division I athletes. The coaching staff consists of Head Coach Craig Thompson, Assistant Boys’ Varsity Coach Gordon Benning, Assistant Girls’ Varsity Coach Tracey Swoope-Jones and Middle School Coach Brian Meegan. Their experience will build and develop prime student athletes to make significant contributions to the Summit track and field program, as well as any other sport of their interest.
