The Scoop from the Top - Tom Monaco

03/01/07

Despite some troublesome weather [two snow days in one week is a real rarity at The Summit!] the month of February was a typically busy and activity-filled month for the Upper School. The third quarter academic work pulsed onward and upward as faculty and students got back into the post examinations groove. We also completed a very large set of second semester Student / Parent /Teacher conferences with an ever-increasing number of students present for these chats – a very positive sign as we all seek to assist our students to be the prime movers and shapers of their own academic destiny.

The successful winter athletic season raced to the final events with both basketball teams playing well and looking forward to the post season tournament, while wrestling and swimming and diving concluded good seasons with small but dedicated athletes achieving fine individual successes.

A third Arts Forum filled an activity period near the end of the month with talented student performers. Our own group of students who perform in a Boys Band had a great run of success in a city wide Battle of the Bands held annually at Bogart’s.

The exceptional 2006 Student Senate completed their year-llong term of office by organizing the largest and most successful Winter Dance in memory, while the new Senate comprised of a dozen juniors completed their six-week training and took office after the President’s Weekend break.

The outgoing Senate and the Key Club combined to raise over a thousand dollars for the Leukemia / Lymphoma Society on behalf of former Summit Middle School teacher Emile Nelson, while also raising considerable funds with the Quarters for Kids Program which is our yearly February service project.

Congratulations to our Mock Trial teams! All three teams took individual awards this month. This is the second year in a row that one of our teams has won and advanced to the regional competition.

The list of college acceptances for this very talented Class of 2007 continues to grow with many of the seniors already in and committed to their choice school – a real tribute to the quality of the academics and students at this school. Mr. Brian Meegan has posted the highly impressive list on his college counseling web site. We are always pleased to see positive college connections being made and we congratulate the seniors, the faculty and Mr. Meegan for their notable successes.

The month of March will see a number of exciting events including the annual induction of juniors into The National Merit Society; the Jesuit College Fair held annually for the students grades 9, 10 and 11; the traditional Lenten Activities in which Upper School students share time and their faith with students in our Lower School; the always- anticipated Spring Musical – "Babes in Arms," this year’s production; and of special note this year, the resumption of our exchange program with our sister school, St. Dominique of Nancy, France. Seven of their students and one teacher will spend nine days including Multicultural Week with the Summit Community. We look forward to these mission-based activities and all the fine work of the faculty and students of this division.
