Girls' soccer wins first-round OHSAA tournament match

Face Taylor in sectional final

October 17, 2006

Summit (8 - 9), ranked #12 in the tournament, upset ninth ranked Goshen (11 - 4 - 2) in the first round of the OHSAA, Cincinnati Division II sectional tournament, 4 - 1 on a rain soaked field at Goshen Monday night. The Lady Knights dominated first half play behind the leadership of senior captains Jade Beason and Tiara Turner. Turner assisted on both of Beason’s goals in setting the tone of the match. Tuner, who regularly drew two defenders, forced the ball wide and twice found Beason streaking at the top of the penalty area. Turner’s hustle at the end of the half resulted in a goal by sophomore JoJo Pogue. Turner blocked an attempted clearance and found Pogue inside the six-yard box with 19 seconds remaining in the half. Summit out shot the Bulldogs 13 - 2 in the half.

Goshen began the second half determined to make it a match. Their hard play resulted in a goal by Staci Hicks with 18 minutes remaining. Freshman keeper Anna Albi was forced to make eight second half saves playing exceptionally well considering the wet conditions. Summit had a difficult time taking advantage of the numbers Goshen was putting forward, but Goshen simply ran out of time. Turner’s hard work throughout the match was rewarded when she was fed a nice ball by fellow senior Mallory Botsford and beat the Goshen goalkeeper one on one with 4 minutes remaining.

Turner finished the match with a goal and three assists, Beason finished with two goals and freshman goalkeeper Anna Albi recorded a career high 10 saves and broke the freshman record for saves in a season with 78.

The Lady Knights next play this Thursday at Taylor at 7pm in the sectional finals.
