The Scoop From The Middle - Warren McClellan

02/01/06

I have been asked, “You talk all the time about how good we are Mr. M, What do you think we don’t do so well, Mr. Positive?” When you won’t let me out of the room weaseling or wise-cracking until I have answered that one, I respond, “Talk to each other.” For the record, 90% say we talk to you pretty well. It’s that other 10% out in the woods I am concerned about. I dropped this conclusion on my leadership team one day last week. Their jaws dropped and I saw them slide back in their chairs, but they didn’t alibi. Instead, the retort was, “Tell us how you want us to communicate better (right back at you, big boy)!” That’s another characteristic that is so strong around here besides the kids- the staff. You have faculty and staff that don’t hide from anything, they get up off the mat and say, “Well, if you are right, how we can do this better?” Then they sit down with team time or committees and design a better way. Between the leadership team and room parent chairs we did a little focus group on communication. We learned that after we SCOOP you and magazine you, we need to e-mail you, call you, tea-time you, dad’s breakfast you, and web-site you, until you cry, “I GO IT!” If somehow we still miss you and you are seen with that in-the-dark, what’s-going-on look on your face by your neighbor, call our Middle School communication, ombudswoman hotline and get Mrs. Wilhelmy. We are going to make obsolete the phrase, “Well, I heard….” We have all the tools and power to do this better, now let’s talk and listen.
