Summit Students To Participate In Interview Process For Prospective Faculty

Students benefit from “Hiring Right!” training program at Standard Textile

May 20, 2005

Starting next week, eleven Upper School students at The Summit Country Day School will be interviewing candidates for faculty positions at the school. This opportunity, titled the Odyssey Program, was designed to teach members of the school’s Diversity and Inclusion Team about the various steps in the interview process and to train them to conduct interviews. In addition to contributing a valuable perspective to faculty hires at The Summit, the goal of the program is to prepare the students for their own college and career interviews.

The group of students spent last Friday at Standard Textile participating in a modified version of the company’s “Hiring Right!” Program. Executives and management at Standard Textile worked with the students on determining the goals of an interview, preparing for an interview, developing and practicing “past behavior” based questions and exploring and celebrating differences. The students watched a video and participated in role-playing, discussions and group activities. The group also worked on creating questions for the upcoming faculty interviews.

“I really enjoyed (the training experience). It is beneficial to learn both sides of the interview process not only to help us determine our own futures but helping to determine future teachers at The Summit,” said Anamika Modawal, junior at The Summit. “I think the Odyssey Program is groundbreaking because I never heard of an opportunity before where students can have such a fundamental role in deciding their future teachers.”

The Summit’s Diversity and Inclusion Team will continue to work with Standard Textile employees. Standard Textile intends to help the students review their questions for the candidates for the faculty positions, they intend to give feedback at the end of the year and they plan to provide a refresher in the fall.

The Diversity and Inclusion Team at The Summit is a group of Upper School students that meet to discuss diversity topics. Their goal is to expand the awareness of diversity at the school for faculty, staff and students. The Odyssey Program is just one of several programs that have been implemented since the team began its work in October.

Founded in 1890, The Summit Country Day School is Cincinnati’s only Catholic, independent, co-educational, college-preparatory school serving students preschool through twelfth grade. The school creates a learning environment that challenges students, faculty and staff to share fully the gifts that have been given to them by God; to grow in grace and wisdom; to develop spiritually, academically, physically, socially and artistically; and to become people of character who value and improve the world they inherit. Located in Hyde Park, The Summit serves nearly 1,060 students from across the tri-state area.
