Boys' Soccer 2008

2008 Season Recap

The Summit Country Day men’s soccer program saw new heights in 2008. The Silver Knights returned to the regional finals and captured another district championship. The team finished the season 18-2-1 after a heart-breaking, penalty kick shootout loss to Mariemont, which saw both teams deadlocked 2-2 after double-overtime.

Although the team was disappointed with missing another trip to the State Semi Finals, the soccer program has many, many accomplishments for which to be proud. The Silver Knights allowed only 14 goals, setting a school record for goals allowed. The 12 shutouts (8 in a row) place them among the tops all-time in the state. The Summit outscored their opponents 100-14 this past season. The team also finished the regular season 14-1-1, tying for best in school history.

Some individual Summit records that fell include junior striker Alex Priede’s 44 goals, eclipsing a 17-year-old record. Alex also finished tied for most goals scored in Ohio, among all divisions. Junior goalkeeper Scott Mays placed himself in history among the best in the state with 12 shutouts (11 in a row, dating back to his freshman year.) Senior midfielder Dan Dwyer, became the only the third Summit soccer player to be named 1st team All-State two years in a row.

Seniors Dan Dwyer, Henry Meininger, along with juniors Alex Priede and Nico Posada were named All-MVC and All-Southwest Ohio. Junior Michael VanSant was named to the MVC second team. Sophomores Jude Austin and Andrew Vance were MVC honorable mentions. Dwyer was recognized as Southwest Ohio Player of the Year and earned a spot on the NSCAA / Adidas All Midwest Region Team. Coach Barnard Baker received MVC and Southwest Ohio Coach of the Year honors.

“After such an incredible season, future Summit soccer players have enormous shoes to fill,” said Coach Baker. “But with 13 returning seniors and a highly touted group of incoming freshmen, 2009 could be just as historic.”
