Multicultural Festival April 7, 9, 11, 2008!

The Multicultural Festival is a three day celebration, which kicks off the month of April in which the students will be educated about different countries, by showing cultural differences, and how we are the same.

We are highlighting four countries from four different continents, like we did last year, to help narrow the field, so that the students can become more immersed in the culture of each country. This year we are featuring: Egypt, South Korea, Turkey and Peru. (Last year we featured China, Colombia, Germany and Nigeria.)

The 3 main events next week are:

Monday, April 7th - the Dessert/Food Festival. The entire Summit community will be able to sample food from around the world during lunch time in all the cafeterias. Parents are invited to bake and bring in their culinary delights Monday morning, and help serve from 11 am to 1 pm.

Wednesday, April 9th, Exhibits and Performances.
The entire school will be able to experience interactive performances and demonstrations of the four featured countries during scheduled times throughout the school day. We will have Taekwondo, Egyptian and Turkish dancing, Birds from Peru, Turkey and Egypt, and an Alpaca from Peru. The performance will be in Kyte Theater, and the Exhibits will be in Flannery Gym. Please see the program for details.

Friday, April 11th.
Ending the week there will be an all school Mass with multicultural influence in Flannery Gym beginning at 8:45 am. The Mass begins with a parade of the flags from each featured country, and the Montessori children wearing costumes of the country of their choice or heritage. It is an out of uniform day, so the rest of the student body and faculty may wear a piece of clothing from a country of their choice. After the Mass we will have a demonstration of Egyptian and Turkish dancing.

During the entire month of April the school will continue to focus on the featured countries, highlighting one country per week. Each grade will study the featured country and make presentations to the other grades. The schedule is as follows:

The week of:
April 7th - 11th - Peru,

April 21st - 25th - South Korea, and
April 28 - May 2 - Turkey
